Character Naming

As an Author naming your Character is an important step right after coming up with the plot. I am here to help you choose the right character name for you and your story.

Make sure your character name is Genre Appropriate. Make sure if it's a Historical Fiction novel or takes place in a real time period that the name was used then. Or if it's a fictionalized place then you can be as creative as you wish.

Just have fun with naming your character. It is after all your story.

Ragnar

Meaning: (Strong Army, Judgment Warrior, Army Rule, Related to German and Scandinavian names like Reginald and Rainer.)

Origin: (Old Norse, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Scandinavian, German)

Pronunciation: (RAG-nahr, R-AW-NG-n-ah-r, RAA-JHNaa-R)

Gender: Male

I saw the TV series Viking advertised and apparently one of the main characters is named Ragnar. I have recently decided to use this name in one of my short stories. It is a very strong masculine name that I really do love.

  1. There's something about Nordic names that really attracts me to them. Maybe I should watch Viking too :p

I recenlty took a flight on Icelandair and the name of the plane was called Askja (AHS-gya), named after the volcano... I always thought that could be a cool name for a guy.

    1. I like the strong meanings and look of Nordic names. I have very few female nordic names, if you know any feel free to suggest some and I may add them to my blog sometime in the future. Also if there is any other names, not just Nordic, you care to suggest feel free.

I like Askja and I might look into this and add it but it won't be for a long time as I have my name list already picked all the way to September / October, LOL. I think I like Askja for a female name but it could look cool as a male name too.

Ragnar is actually going to be the name of the older brother of one of my characters who is named Havelock, one of the names you commented on before. There was just something about Ragnar & Havelock I love most of all over other Nordic names I have looked at.

I haven't watched the show Viking but I saw the info advertised. I heard that Viking is similar to Game of Thrones (Neither of which I have watched.)

  2. Haha, I remember Havelock. I think you said he was gonna be evil or an usurper? For some reason I think of Thor and his brother Loki when you described the brothers.

    1. I don’t know much about Thor & Loki but I have heard of them.I think I will look more into them to see if they may be a bit like my characters.

My characters are going to be complicated. Havelock is the younger and Ragnar the older and from, a long line of Ragnar’s. It is discovered though that Havelock was born first and named Ragnar. But he was frail and ill and told he would never be strong so a few short years later the parents have another son. They made it appear that the older was the younger and they switched the names.

Havelock is both good and bad. He wants to dethrone the King which is right but he wants to do it in the wrong way. Now Ragnar who would seem to be the good guy working with the King and other rulers is actually found to be called the Destroyer of Worlds.

My female heroine Catalina a Reviver of Dieing Worlds is stuck in the middle of this power struggle and comes out the truly victorious powerful one. So yeah it is super complicated. I have to wait till I have time to write it as I am already writing a novel and editing two others.

I try to have the most accurate Meanings, Origin and Pronunciations for the names on this blog. It is best though to do research into the names you decide to use for your characters as there can be errors on my blog. Or meanings, origins, and pronunciations I have not seen thus not been able to add to this blog.
